| Heat definitely
seems to have potential, so here is a side experiment that I have been thinking
of for some time. I added about 1 quart of distilled water to the container,
and added one scoop of Oxyclean to it. I noticed in my first experiments
with Oxyclean that I yield much better results with hot water than cool.
These coins weigh 28.2 grams combined. They are not heavily soiled, so doubt much weight will be lost. This should be a decent assortment of coins, with varying dirts, patinas, encrustations and even a partially silvered Ant (which has encrustation, false patina and extremely light at 2.9g). Will either check the coins tonight or tomorrow. Preliminary hopes are high. May also add a tblsp of lemon juice in the second stage, lemon juice really reacts with oxyclean. |

| After about 8 hours. some dirt has been removed. Coins now weigh 28.1 grams, so a whopping 0.1g of dirt has been removed. The white is residue from the Oxyclean, and from experience, is easily removed with a toothbrush. Encrustations seem to be a little softer and patinas that are visible are still intact. All is going well. Will use my WS/BS/DW solution as a base, and add 1/2 scoop of Oxyclean to the next run. | ||||||||||||||||||

| Below is a scan of the coins after another 8 hours of cooking, 16 total. I somehow gained a coin, and am not sure which it is, so the weight doesn't help much. It's at 28.8grams now. Throwing them back in a fresh WS/BS/DW solution with 1/2 scoop oxyclean, | ||||||||||||||||||

| Here's after another 30 hours or so. I added a tblsp of oxyclean every 10 hours or so. Coins now weigh 28.5g, so 0.3g of crud was removed. A good amount of the green encrustation on the Ant has been removed, and spotty silvering is now visible. Coins that show patina are still intact, but many of these coins seem to have been problem coins, so I'm not sure how good these were to test. Ah well, everything looks good at least, and dirt and encrustation is being removed. Back to the pot. | ||||||||||||||||||
