Cameo Copper/Brass Cleaner
Also bought at Wal-mart for under a buck, is Cameo Copper/Brass/Porcelain Cleaner.
I'm guessing that this stuff will probably eat the patina off, if there is any effect. It is supposed to be used as a scrubbing agent, but my first experiment will be solely a soak with Distilled Water and this.
Three coins being sacrficied. The darker one is encrusted; and to me, would be a prime candidate of zapping. The other two are just dirty. Let's see what it does.
It has soaked overnight, and there has been some definite changes. Wiped with a cloth, most of the dirt has come off. The top left coin has turned a yellowish color, and some of the dirt remains in the centers. No details are visible though. The top right coin has lost much of its dirt and some of the coral-like encrustation. Very little details visible so far and the patina is intact. Byzantine is nearly clean, though very little details visible. I picked some of the worst looking coins to try with this, since I thought the chemical would eat the coins up.This may warrant more experiments. I'll update with pictures perhaps tonight after work... and more soaking.
After about 30 hours of soaking, this is what we have. Byzantine has lost some of its patina (if it was full) and most of its dirt. The dark green coin is still somewhat encrusted, but most of the dirt has come off and some details are visible. The yellowish coin is starting to show details... and it looks like it has yellowish sand under the mud, hence the color (I think). See scan below. Throwing them back in to see what happens.
