| Update to apparatus.
Using 5 gallon container still. One bag of filter material and one bag of DI resin lying in the bottom, weighted down by culls. I am still using the old fashioned filter, with DI resin. Using 3 6" air stones, and a 10" bubble wand. My previous setup seemed to have less results than the small tank... so I was thinking it was the filter media bags. The coins may have been too scrunched up in the bags, and/or water flow was minimal. I bought some wire mesh organizers, 6" x 9" which have a lot larger mesh. I bolted 2 together on top of each other leaving about 1" between the trays, and suspended them by wire from the lid. I will change the wire to a bolt whenever I get to the hardware store. On the other side, is a single tray which is also suspended with wire. I could only put one tray on that side because the filter is too tall and didn't have the space. The coins are single layered pretty much, and the bubbles go trhough the wire mesh pretty well. Let's see how this one goes. I added the bolts through the lid today, and received some coins from a local dealer here in Bloomington. I picked these 11 coins at random from the mix. They weigh 44.9 grams to begin with, and are completely dry. Soaking will probably add some weight initially, since the coins will most likely absorb some water. |

| Seems I am back on track. Coins lost 0.5 grams collectively over about 36 hours. A couple of these are done and only need a silver brush. I toothbrushed these to remove loose dirt, and there has been a drastic change in soil. A thing to note though, it seems that the coins that have green patina in this batch is not actually patina, it is a light encrustation. It feels like 60 grit sandpaper. The Augvstvs moneyer is losing some of this coarse "patina", as is the Clavdivs. I think you can see the coarseness pretty well in the pre scans above on the Concordia Militivm in the top row, center, so you can see what I'm talking about. It is dissolving, look at the pre and after shots on the same coin, especiialy the reverse. I will classify this as nothing but success! After only 36 hours, I am to the point where I'd expect to be after a week or so in normal soaking. Should receive more coins next week, to verify my results. | ||||||||||||||||||
