| Here are the
coins after a week or so. I boiled them in my ws/bs/dw solution (similar
to Gringott's #2) for about 5 minutes, to remove the oil. The oil seems
to loosen the dirt decently, and seems to be softening the encrustation.
I can scratch some of the green encrustations with my fingernail. After
boiling, my water was nearly black, so dirt is definitely being loosened. This may very well be a good alternative to those that prefer olive oil. My olive oil experience was quite lacking, with minimal dirt removal, funky smells, patinas being eaten and alot of pits showing on coins. Only time will tell how effective this is... so back to the oil for a couple weeks. |

| Coins have soaked another week (8/17). I boiled the oil off in soapy water, and gave them a quick toothbrush. Coins now weigh 38.8 grams. Some dirt has been removed, and encrustations are being softened. I just broke a piece off with my fingers that was bugging me. Patinas seem to be darkened, but intact. 3 or 4 of these coins have the sandpaper texture, which is odd, since they came from a different source than the ones in my fishtank experiment, and I'm using totally different techniques with them. I don't remember this sandpaper texture on coins before, so either I didn't notice or the coins must be coming from a new region. This technique seems rather slow, but safe, and seems effective on encrustations. So if you like olive oil, I think this is quite a better choice. I'm getting better results, it doesn't cost as much, comes easily off the coins and doesn't seem to have harmful effects that I witnessed in my olive oil experiments. Back in the oil with these. | |||||||||||||

| About a month has passed (9/19). Coins now weigh 38.6g, so 0.2g was removed. This procedure is slow, but seems to be working safely. Throwing them back into oil and forgetting about them for another month or so. | |||||||||||||
