| I am using
Wurth saBesto Battery Cleaner on these 4 coins. This stuff works wonders
to remove the encrustations from your car battery terminals, and is used
by many professional mechanics. I'm pretty sure the encrustations
are made of different minerals (battery compared to coin) but you never
know. These coins weigh 12.3 grams initially, and have been soaking in distilled water for a couple weeks or so, to no avail. The one coin has bright blue and nearly flourescent orange crud on it, one of the small coins is heavily caked in dirt that won't let go and seems to have at least a partial patina, the other small coin has the dense clay that won't dissolve, and Fel Temp has some partial silvering on the reverse, but is plagued with green and white crystalline encrustation, mainly on the obverse. Let's see what it does. |

| After 8 hours,
this actually looks promising. Coins now weigh 12.2g. The dirt on the upper
left coin has not changed too much yet. The large Fel Temp has lost most
of the encrustation on the reverse, to the point where I think I would be
able to finish it by hand. A decent amount has been removed on the obverse
so far, look at the right side of the bust. Upon the Ant, the most noticable
difference is on the reverse. All of the blue encrustation has been removed.
Much of the orange has been removed as well, and even a little silvering
is starting to show. The dirt on the bottom right coin is considerably softer,
and I could scrape most of it off most likely. All patinas (that existed before) are fully intact. Throwing them back into a container and soaking them down again. |

| Coins now weigh
12.1g, so yet another .1g was removed. This is after approximately another
12 hours, so 20 hours total. The light sandy coin has lost a little dirt
and the reverse is just a tad more visible... but not much change. The Fel
Temp has lost more encrustation, which is more easily viewed upon the reverse.
The scan of the obverse isn't showing the difference very well, but the
right 1/3 of the coin is nearly clear. The mud-caked coin is still encoated,
and it actually seems harder today for some reason. This stuff is eating
through the orange stuff on the Ant decently. I think it is easier to see
the difference on the obverse. The orange encrustation is being softened
as well... I tried to scrape it on the reverse a little, and the top layers
scraped easily off (see along rim). This stuff seems to work great for encrustations, but has little effect on dirt (so far). |
