| Coins have soaked
for about 12 hours in a washing soda/distilled water bath. I changed the
water after about 12 hours to distilled water only. I didn't rinse the container
or such, and the reading was at around 220ppm. The reading now (after 12
hours of DW) is around 550. So there are alot more dirt particles in the
water. Comparatively, another container that is soaking at room temperature
for the same duration has increased from 20 to 70ppm, and another has increased
from 230 to 310ppm. Granted, the soils, number of coins, and quite a few
other factors also come into play... but the coins are similar; and I think
the increase of 50 and 80, on normal distilled water soaks, compared to
330 increase in the crockpot, demonstrates that heat helps. See below for
a scan of the coins. Going to do a DW/WS/BS solution next, 1.5 tbs of washing
soda and .5tbs baking powder per quart of distlled water. One thing I can
say, I haven't had any outbreaks of Bronze diesease since I started soaking
in Washing Soda. I don't see any loss in patinas, and there is quite a noticable difference in the coins. The Fel Temp probably just needs a hit with a toothbrush and be called done. Actually a couple coins probably just need a toothbrush. Top scan is before, bottom is after. Some coins seem to have lightened in color, but that may be due to residues from the washing soda. I won't find out until I brush them. |

| I don't think the scan here is really showing the difference in the dirt... there was alot of dirt just sitting in the bottom, and alot has come off of the coins. The Islamic has turned the blue color, but it only had a partial patina to begin with. Going to let the "cook" until tomorrow night after work. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Scan below shows the results after 2 more days of cooking; three days total. The Fel Temp has turned out woth odd colored patination. The large oblong coin in the bottom middle is starting to show details... it's one of the mid 250's rulers that I have yet to get a good coin of from uncleaneds. The Islamic has lost the blue coating. The middle left black coin is still pretty well coated with what reminds me of asphalt, but I can make out a helmeted bust left. The middle light green coin is also showing spotchy orangish patina like the Fel Temp. -I'm going to stick to plain distilled water next time... heat seems to have odd effects with Washing Soda. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Going to let them cook for another day or two in distilled water. Then I should have new coins to try... and a day off to try to hook up a water pump for moving water. I'm impressed by my other experiment. Just got my de-ionizer and trying that, see if I can see any difference. Haven't gotten around to posting it though..... | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
